What is a Community Learning Champion?
A community learning champion promotes the value of learning to others - friends, relatives, and workmates - and encourages them to get involved. A community learning champion is often someone for whom learning has made a positive change in their own life.
Community learning champions may be volunteers who are active in their community, or they may add the role of community learning champion to their work. One example would be health visitors who encourage people to learn about diet and fitness, or other subjects of interest.
Community learning champions encourage people to learn but they need to be impartial. This means they do not 'sell' particular courses or learning providers, but they can 'signpost' possible opportunities for learning.
Community learning champions can be called learning ambassadors, mentors, advocates and other names.
How do I get involved?
The new Community Learning Champions Support Programme will provide a national identity - a brand and a badge for learning champions. It also offers development funding, support for training and development and a series of national and regional events, starting with the launch event on Thursday October 8th in Birmingham.
