Community Learning Champions conference

An important part of the Community Learning Champions Support Programme is bringing people together to learn from existing good practice and develop ideas to make sure that Community Learning Champions (CLCs are well supported and able to work effectively to bring more people into learning.

Regional events will take place between January and March 2010 to launch local networks.

A celebration of the achievements of the Community Learning Champions and the people who have been encouraged to take up learning will take place in March 2011.

Over 150 people attended the Community Learning Champions (CLC) programme launch event in Birmingham on 8 October 2009. It was an opportunity for participants to find out more about the National Support Programme, network with other CLCs and take part in group discussions.

Participants were invited to discuss their thoughts on the CLC approach and how it could be applied to their individual areas of activities. The programme included keynotes from Liz Lawson, Team Leader for Informal Adult Learning at the Department for Business Innovation and Skills and Prof Bob Fryer CBE, former National Director for Widening Participation in Learning, Department of Health.

Liz Cousins, Project Manager of the CLC Support Programme, said:”This was a fantastic opportunity for us to tell people about the plans for the programme which, while being launched today, will continue to develop over the next few months. It is by hearing what will be most useful to people working to support and develop CLCs that we will make sure that the programme has the lasting impact it should have.

One of the most telling parts of the day were the videos which showed how people, acting as Community Learning Champions, are making a real difference to their lives, the lives of others and the communities they live in. Thanks to this programme there will be a lot more of this work going on in the future’
